Preventing Youth Safety Accidents in Restaurants – Essential Tips for Teen Workers
In every one of the 13 Restaurant Employee Safety Training (REST) videos, there’s a section focused on the specific hazards that come with that topic. For our Youth Safety training, that means looking closely at how accidents happen—and, more importantly, how to prevent them. Young workers often bring great energy to the restaurant environment, but without the right awareness and habits, that energy can lead to unnecessary risks.
The majority of slips, trips, falls, burns, and cuts in restaurants are preventable. When teen and youth employees learn to follow proper workplace procedures, wear personal protective equipment (PPE), and stay aware of their surroundings, everyone benefits.
Here are some key prevention tips from the REST Youth Safety module:
-
Manual Handling – Slow down, avoid rushing, and use proper leverage when lifting or carrying. Keep your line of vision open and avoid carrying hot liquids or overloaded items.
-
Slips, Trips, and Falls – Keep pathways clear, clean spills immediately, post wet floor signs, and wear proper slip-resistant footwear.
-
Strains and Sprains – Use carts for heavy items, lift with your legs (not your back), and never try to move something that’s too heavy without help.
-
Burns – Wear PPE, follow standard safety procedures, avoid loose clothing, and never stand directly over fryers.
-
Knives and Cuts – Store knives properly, keep them sharp, never leave them in sinks, and turn blades inward away from walkways.
-
Machinery – Always ensure guards are in place, keep hair and clothing secured, and avoid distractions when operating equipment.
Stay focused, avoid distractions, and always watch out for potential hazards before they cause harm. Preventing accidents is everyone’s job—and it starts with awareness.
