How Can Bloodborne Pathogens Be Prevented in Restaurants?

The majority of accidents involving bloodborne pathogens (BBPs) are preventable. By following proper workplace procedures and staying aware of your surroundings, you can keep yourself, your coworkers, and your customers safe.

The federal Bloodborne Pathogens Rule—found in the Code of Federal Regulations and enforced by OSHA—requires employers to provide proper training and PPE for any employee at risk of coming into contact with BBPs. But prevention also depends on the actions you take every day.

Key Steps for Prevention

  • Trash safety: Never push down trash bags to compact them. Restroom trash, in particular, may contain needles. Pushing them down could cause a serious injury.

  • Needle safety: Never touch needles left behind by guests. Call your manager immediately and keep others away.

  • Biohazard items: If you find bandages or items contaminated with blood, alert your manager right away.

  • Assume all blood is infectious: Always wear gloves when instructed to handle blood-contaminated objects. Treat every situation with caution.

  • Check yourself: Slow down when you’re feeling rushed. Mistakes happen most often when employees are hurrying.

  • Wear proper PPE: Use gloves, aprons, or other equipment provided by your employer to protect yourself.

  • Stay aware of your surroundings: Don’t rush through service, bussing, or restroom cleaning. If an accident occurs, alert others, block off the hazard, and wait for proper cleanup.

⚠️ Quick Fact
OSHA requires annual bloodborne pathogen training for at-risk employees—and employers must provide PPE at no cost to staff.

đź’ˇ Safety Tip
Make it a habit to pause and check your environment before bussing tables, compacting trash, or cleaning. Awareness prevents accidents.
